Kaldor Public Art Projects

Established by visionary philanthropist, John Kaldo AO, Kaldor Public Art Projects has played a critical part in Australia’s contemporary art history bringing groundbreaking contemporary international artists to Australia to create unique works that are free to the public.  Starting with the first project in 1969, Wrapped Coast by Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Kaldor Public Art Projects is dedicated to taking art outside museum walls and transforming public spaces with innovative contemporary projects.

The Balnaves Foundation has supported Kaldor Public Art Projects since 2008, ensuring these exciting projects become a reality and remain free to the public. Kaldor Public Art Projects has completed 38 projects with artists such as Gilbert & George, Jeff Koons, Bill Viola, Damian Hurst, John Baldessari, Michael Landy, Roman Ondak, Marina Abramović, Jonathan Jones and Anri Sala.

Project 38, Thomas Demand: The Object Lesson, opened from August 2025 to January 2026. German artist Thomas Demand created an exhibition space in the Naala Badu building of the Art Gallery of New South Wales designed to display the John Kaldor Family Collection in a new and dynamic way.

In 2019 Kaldor Public Art Projects celebrated its 50th anniversary with an exhibition created by British artist Michael Landy to celebrate the world’s oldest public art organisation. Held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the exhibition commissioned artists Alicia Frankovich, Agatha Gothe-Snape, Ian Milliss and Imants Tillers to commemorate the organisation and the man behind it, John Kaldor.
