The National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) is Australia’s leading centre for education and training in the performing arts. Their team of educators is made up of seasoned professionals with proven expertise across the full range of dramatic disciplines including acting, writing, scenic construction, technical theatre, movement, voice, costume and production design.
The partnership between NIDA and The Balnaves Foundation began in 2021 with the expansion of the First Nations program, with the Balnaves Foundation serving as the Principal Patron.
This philanthropic commitment enables NIDA to welcome more First Nations students and encourage and support them through their journey and study at NIDA. The Program includes a significant Bachelor of Fine Arts scholarship, valued at $102,000 as of 2025, for First Nations students throughout their degree, one per year from 2022 – 2027 and a six-month paid industry internship for each scholarship recipient at the conclusion of their study as a pathway to employment.
In addition to this, scholarship recipients are matched with a First Nations Arts Industry mentor, supported with additional travel to home as required and participate in an cultural experience during their studies.
As part of the overall contribution to NIDA, the Foundation is also providing funding to enable an Indigenous Elder in Residence to offer wellbeing support and mentorship to all First Nations students.
