Sydney Dance Company is one of Australia’s leading contemporary dance companies. Established in 1969, the Company has cemented its reputation as a creative powerhouse, with an acclaimed group of dancers presenting new work by Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela and guest choreographers, designers, composers and musicians. Sydney Dance Company is internationally recognised as a strong force in contemporary dance, with a broad community beyond the practice and performance of the professional Ensemble. Sydney Dance Company believes in the universality of dance, and with the largest public dance class program in Australia, people can connect with the grace, strength and creativity that lives within all of us.
Since 2014, The Balnaves Foundation has supported Sydney Dance Company to create opportunities for the next generation of choreographers through New Breed, an annual production and presentation program that gives emerging choreographers a platform to create brand new works for the Sydney Dance Company. Each year four choreographers, some of whom are drawn from Sydney Dance Company’s Ensemble and student body, are selected to develop an original choreographed work under the mentorship of Bonachela. Since its inception, New Breed has provided 39 choreographers with the opportunity to create for a world-leading dance company, with some of these works going on to tour as part of the Company’s mainstage season. These include Melanie Lane’s WOOF and Gabrielle Nankivell’s Wildebeest.
