Yalari

Yalari, since 2005, have been providing Indigenous children from regional and remote communities across Australia the opportunity to receive a full boarding school scholarship for their entire secondary education. Yalari’s vision is to be one of Australia’s great enduring educational and leadership foundations empowering Indigenous people from regional and remote Australia.

Each year Yalari offer over 50 Indigenous scholarships to children from regional and remote communities to attend one of Australia’s leading boarding schools from year 7 through to year 12. Starting in 2023, The Balnaves Foundation supports students from the Northern Slopes region in New South Wales through Yalari’s Rosemary Bishop Indigenous Education Scholarships.

Mrs Rosemary Bishop was a primary school teacher at Murgon State School and instrumental in securing a scholarship for Yalari’s founding director, Waverly Stanley AM, to attend Toowoomba Grammar School back in 1979. Named in her honour, the Rosemary Bishop Indigenous Education Scholarships cover full boarding and tuition costs to attend one of nineteen of Australia’s leading boarding schools from Year 7 through to Year 12. In addition to gaining a high-quality academic education, Yalari scholars are also exposed to extracurricular sporting, vocational and life experiences.

Yalari’s program design recognises the challenges of adapting to boarding school life and of moving to a major city from regional and remote communities. Additional support is provided throughout the scholarship, including locally based student support officers, annual year-level camps for the Yalari cohort and the opportunity to connect with current and past Yalari scholars.
